The Creative Process
To appreciate this art all the more, one must look to the unique way in which this artist paints. Brett Gilbert traded in his brushes a long time ago. For what? What do you eat your cereal with? Spoons!

Application of the oils are done with different sized spoons and a variety of dental instruments. Because the paint is used so generously with each “spoonstroke,” each completed work takes up to six months to a year to completely dry.

He is also an obsessively fast painter. When starting a painting he compulsively must finish it in one sitting. Generally each painting is completed in one day, except for the oversized, more complex which take no more three.

His subject matter and genre, from Pop Art, Landscape, Portrait, Still Life, Figurative, to Abstract are continuously changing and evolving as he himself grows emotionally as a person and as a painter.

Artist’s Statement
Brett Gilbert found a career in painting in a most unusual way. Doing professional Stand-Up Comedy for over 10 years, he needed a creative outlet to fill the downtime between shows. This led to watercolors that he could easily take with him on the road. That in turn saw it’s way to acrylic and then to it’s destined outcome - oil on canvas.

Painting is as intense as being on stage with a live audience. You never truly know how it will turn out. You have a plan but it eventually takes on a life of it’s own. Every painting, like every crowd, is different. With stand-up I’m there to instantly please hundreds of others, with painting it's just me and the canvas. I’ll paint for hours on end and think of everything and nothing. -- Brett Gilbert
